On Thursday, the 1st of April 2010 the cultural institution Hamburger Botschaft has organized a press conference "Cologne Contemporary - The First Two Years". The event was supported by Thalia-Theater, Hamburg and scoop think tank, Hamburg.

Olaf Bargheer

THE BIENNALISTS' MANIFESTO

Disgusted by the professionalized business of cultural activities, trying to sell platitudes, tired reminiscences of what has been well-established, or timid and rather destitute developments to the market and public art awareness, all this however with the pretense of a search for “young talent” which is nothing but hollow puppet theatre for the dumbfounded,

nauseated by the arrogance and high-handedness with which young wannabe-artists in the time after Harald Szeemann, probably the only truly autonomous exhibition maker of our time, pronounce themselves curators of every kind and present vain, boring events in museums and art societies,

unsettled by the uniformity with which the same old story, which appears to be provocative, while in truth being vulgar, is presented to the audience and the press as new under the cloak of innovative art projects

we, that is 42 young artists from 30 countries, have decided to bring an art biennale of our own design into being. Just like an orchestra that can do without an arrogant, egomaniac and indifferent conductor, we curate ourselves. In a readjustment process, which went on for several years and was astoundingly unpretentious, always geared to a matter-of-fact discussion and quick to discern what was applicable from that which wasn’t, the idea of a radical re-formulation of the Biennale issues was born.
Against the background of a fast-spreading Biennale-inflation which doesn’t spare even the least important place and provides surface attractions for the audiences with flimsy glamour, we have decided on a fully autonomous design. Not depending on sponsoring, without the appearance of the usual PR-professionalism, we understand the Biennale itself as the art project that unites us, autonomous in thought, and in practice a classical work-in-progress project.

We are carried by the pleasant and productive charm of an “arte poverissima”, which prepones the artist’s excitement at the time of stage fright to the beginning of his/her development and wants to confront the viewer with an amateurish enthusiasm that is both simple and pure and tries to convey a little of that open-mindedness which remains if one saves on preliminaries and cultural mediating.

What began in the summer of 2002 at the Biehl Lake with seven young artists on the occasion of the “Money and Value – The Last Taboo”- exhibition designed by Harald Szeemann at the Arteplage, at the foot of Jean Nouvel’s golden cuboid, is now, after six years of intense preparation and a handsome number of as yet undiscovered approaches, going to be presented to the public: as a self-conscious expression of artistic idiosyncrasy – imperfect and visionary.
